PAIN MANAGEMENT

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Our Group offers a comprehensive range of services for patients with acute or chronic pain. Through the combined expertise of a multidisciplinary team of pain specialists, we offer the most advanced treatment options currently available, in a supportive, compassionate environment.

Pain is a complex medical problem that can have profound effects on your physical and mental well-being. Our goal is to help you decrease your level of pain and suffering, to return you to your maximum level of functioning and independence, and to help you restore your quality of life.

Your physician may refer you to one of our Pain Management Offices for evaluation, for one or more specific procedures, or for ongoing treatment. We have prepared this information to provide an overview of services available at each one of our Pain Management Offices and to explain what you may expect during your treatment.

COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION

Unless your physician refers you to the Pain Management Center to undergo a specific procedure or series of procedures, you will be scheduled to undergo a comprehensive evaluation.

During this evaluation, one of our Pain Physicians will conduct a full physical and psychological assessment of your condition, including a review of your medical records, and X-rays. In some cases, supplemental diagnostic tests may be necessary to further pinpoint the cause of your pain. (We will, however, avoid unnecessary duplication of tests wherever possible.)

INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT PLAN

The treatment plan developed by the Pain Management team will be specially tailored to your condition and degree of pain, your needs and your personal objectives. You treatment plan may included a single approach, or a combination of different types of therapies: medical therapies, including both medications and special procedures.

MEDICATIONS

Your recommended medical therapy may include one or more medications (analgesics). Different medications are prescribed to treat different aspects of your pain. Your recommended treatment plan may also involve the use of investigational medications.

Medications used to treat pain fall into several major categories:

  • Opiate "pain killers" are often used to treat acute pain or cancer-related pain, and sometimes prescribed for chronic pain.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs may be helpful in alleviating pain by reducing swelling and irritation.
  • Anti-depressants may be helpful in reducing certain types of pain. They may also be used to help patients sleep at night.
  • Membrane stabilizers are helpful for some patients in whom pain is caused by abnormal electrical discharges in damaged nerves.

PROCEDURAL THERAPY

We offer a variety of procedures to treat pain, including various neural blocks and several innovative procedures. Depending on your particular condition, you may be referred for single or ongoing procedural appointments. These procedures may also be used in combination with other therapies.

PAIN AND SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT CENTER

Pain is a term that historically has been used to describe a state that usually is short lived and self-resolving. But in some cases, pain can be a chronic unrelenting phenomenon, affecting people both physically and mentally.

One in five people suffers from some type of chronic pain. Pain is second to the common cold as a cause for a doctor's visit. From common complaints like headaches or back pain, to pain associated with osteoporosis, cancer, chronic regional pain syndrome, and pelvic pain. Our Physicians could provide relief through comprehensive evaluation and innovative treatments. Our goal is to relieve and manage pain that does not respond to conservative therapy.

Pain is a complex medical problem that can have profound effects on your physical and mental well-being. Our goal is to help you decrease your level of pain and suffering, to return you to your maximum level of functioning and independence, and to help you restore your quality of life.
